A planned car purchase in six months, renovation work to start before winter, or simply a need for cash flow to smooth out an unexpected expense: in each case, the type of credit chosen changes the final cost by several hundred euros. Let’s take stock of the concrete mechanisms to master before signing anything.
Installment payments and mini-loans: what changes on November 20, 2026
Paying in three or four installments online, taking out a mini-loan of a few dozen euros via an app: until now, these operations largely escaped consumer credit regulation. Ordinance No. 2025-880 of September 3, 2025, and its implementing decrees change the game.
As of November 20, 2026, installment payments and deferred payments of less than three months will become consumer credit. The same applies to mini-loans under 200 euros, so-called “free” loans (with no interest or negligible fees), and lease-to-own contracts (LOA). The consumer credit ceiling will also increase to 100,000 euros, up from 75,000 euros previously.
In practice, to find credit information on Aujourd’hui J’investis, the same pre-contractual information obligations will apply to a “4 times without fees” as to a classic personal loan. The consumer will have a right of withdrawal, and the lender will have to verify their creditworthiness, including for small amounts.
For borrowers, the practical consequence is simple: each payment facility will now be recorded and tracked. Multiplying installment payments may weigh in the overall assessment of debt capacity when applying for a mortgage or renovation credit.

Enhanced creditworthiness analysis: what the bank really checks
The usual advice (“check your repayment capacity”) remains vague. The decree of August 1, 2026, imposes much more precise obligations on credit institutions.
Traceability of financial assessment
The bank or lending institution must now be able to demonstrate how the borrower’s situation was assessed. We’re no longer talking about a simple glance at the last three bank statements. Every step of the creditworthiness analysis must be documented and retained.
For the borrower, this means that the file to be provided will be more complete. Preparing in advance their proof of income, recurring expenses (including ongoing loans and installment payments) speeds up processing and limits back-and-forth.
Support for borrowers in difficulty
The same decree formalizes the referral of vulnerable clients to independent support services. Individuals registered in the FICP (file of repayment incidents for personal loans, managed by the Banque de France) are subject to specific procedures triggered by the lending institution.
In practice, if payment delays accumulate, the bank is required to offer a follow-up mechanism, not just to send reminders. This is a notable change from the previous situation where the initiative almost always fell to the borrower.
Mortgage, personal loan, or earmarked credit: concrete selection criteria
The right credit is not the one that displays the lowest rate on an advertisement banner. It is the one whose structure corresponds to the financed project.
- The personal loan is suitable when you want to maintain flexibility: no need to justify the use of funds, early repayment possible, adjustable duration. In return, the rate is generally higher than that of earmarked credit.
- The earmarked credit (car, work, renovation) ties the loan to a specific purchase. If the sale is canceled, the credit is also canceled. This is real protection, but you lose the freedom to reallocate the amount.
- The mortgage remains the appropriate vehicle for any investment in real estate, with long durations and lower rates, but with application fees, guarantees, and borrower insurance that increase the total cost.
On this last point, feedback varies by profile: a young borrower without a down payment will not obtain the same conditions as an investor with existing assets. Comparing only the APR (annual percentage rate) between several offers remains the most reliable method, as it includes all mandatory fees.

Online credit simulation: what can be gained (and its limits)
Online simulators have multiplied, and their use has become a reflex for many borrowers. They allow for a quick estimate of a monthly payment, repayment duration, or total cost.
Their main limitation: the simulation does not take into account the individual risk profile. The displayed rate is often a floor rate, reserved for the best files. The actual monthly payment may be significantly higher once the creditworthiness analysis is completed.
To get the most out of a simulation, it is recommended to enter realistic amounts (not the minimum) and to include optional insurances in the calculation. Running two or three simulations with different institutions allows for a credible range before submitting a formal application.
Usury rate and legal protection of consumer credit
The usury rate, published quarterly by the Banque de France, sets the ceiling beyond which an institution cannot lend. This mechanism protects the borrower against abusive conditions, but it can also block certain files: when market rates rise, the usury rate sometimes takes several months to adjust.
Before signing an offer, checking that the proposed APR remains below the applicable usury rate for the relevant credit category avoids an unpleasant surprise. A credit whose APR exceeds the usury rate is null and void by law.
The reform of November 2026 does not change this mechanism, but by expanding the scope of consumer credit, it subjects more operations to this protection. Installment payments, previously off the radar, will also have to comply with these ceilings.
Financing a project without mastering the current regulatory framework is akin to comparing offers with different rules of the game. The changes expected by the end of 2026 will reshuffle the cards, especially for small amounts and LOA. Taking the time to read the preliminary offer and check the APR remains the most profitable action one can take before committing.
